Is it Safe to Order Online During COVID-19?

These are unsettling and unprecedented times, no doubt about it. As it becomes increasingly clear just how infectious COVID-19 is, some shoppers have asked questions about just how safe online shopping is. Experts agree that the virus typically can survive on different objects and materials ranging from three hours up to three days. (These findings may change as additional research and testing occurs in future.)

That being said, it's not likely for the virus to survive on your purchased items throughout the shipping process (especially as shipping has generally been slowed). Shipping conditions are a difficult place for COVID-19 to survive, so it's unlikely you'll be exposed by the package itself.

The World Health Organization says it is safe to order packages from areas with reported COVID-19 cases. Quoting from their website: "The likelihood of an infected person contaminating commercial goods is low and the risk of catching the virus that causes COVID-19 from a package that has been moved, travelled, and exposed to different conditions and temperature is also low.”

They state that, "The most important thing to know about coronavirus on surfaces is that they can easily be cleaned with common household disinfectants that will kill the virus. Studies have shown that the COVID-19 virus can survive for up to 72 hours on plastic and stainless steel, less than 4 hours on copper and less than 24 hours on cardboard."

They continue to say, "As, always clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water. Avoid touching your eyes, mouth, or nose."

The CDC confirms, "[T]here is likely very low risk of spread from products or packaging that are shipped over a period of days or weeks at ambient temperatures." This statement by the CDC is talking about packages in the shipment process for at least several days and without coming into contact with sources of contamination after packaging.
